Piaggia is a large Tuscan ex-farmhouse now carefully converted to be a luxurious place to stay. Set in a small valley, surrounded by umbrella pine trees and evergreen oak, this air-conditioned villa is a refuge from the pace of modern life, the perfect spot to gather a family, a group of friends or even business colleagues to refresh and reset.
The gardens are large and well-tended, providing ample space to spread out beyond the surrounds of the private swimming pool. Gated access to the fenced grounds adds to the feeling of comfort and relaxation.
Piaggia has a village nearby, with a grocery store, bars and restaurants. Unusually for Tuscany, the walk is flat and mainly along a quiet and well maintained dirt track. The walk is just shy of a mile, around 1.4km - so a 15 to 20 minute walk.
Piaggia is listed under the following categories:
The villa has a main body plus an annexe. The main large villa building is two floors high with a further central tower that was once a dovecote and today houses a master suite. The main ground floor entrance leads to a dining room, with a large kitchen on the left. The well-equipped kitchen has two dishwashers, a large fridge freezer with a further one in a side room, oven, microwave, toaster, fruit-juicer and plenty of pots and pans for keen cooks. Nearby there is also a laundry room with a washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing board.
Beyond the kitchen, a sunroom opens onto the pool area and provides space to relax with a pool table, a flat-screen satellite TV, comfortable armchairs and sofas. The main living room is, however, on the right of the main entrance, in a space that spans the width of this large house and has a fireplace for autumn evenings, more sofas and armchairs, another TV and a Bose music system.
Upstairs you will find three double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms (all with bath and walk-in shower) plus one twin bedroom with an en-suite bathroom (bath only. Stairs lead to the tower ex dovecote which has a large bathroom through which one has access to a master bedroom at the very top of the house.
Back outside, the annexe building, on the other side of the swimming pool, has a sitting room, a full kitchen and a shower room on the ground floor. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, a double and a single, and a shower room.
The swimming pool lies between the main villa and the annex, 12 metres x 7 metres with a paved surround and spa. This pool can be heated with prior warning. Within the gated and fenced gardens also contain a boules court (called 'bocce' in Italy) as well as large lawned areas and attractive flower beds.
The villa is well-placed to reach all the most famous tourist sights of Tuscany, with San Gimignano 40 minutes away, Florence and Lucca just over an hour, Pisa barely 30 minutes and Siena around an hour and twenty minutes.
More locally, the hills that surround Piaggia are dotted with hill towns, churches and ancient sites - starting with the little village of Palaia with its circular castle at its heart - or a strange temple to 'Minerva Medica' hidden in a nearby forest.
For those who love exploring on foot, the area is crisscrossed with footpaths and old, unpaved tracks, often leading to excellent wineries or old castles.
The wine-estate within which Piaggia is housed offers wine-tours and tastings of their excellent wines, while venturing further afield will bring you to Bolgheri to the south-west or Chianti to the south-east in under an hour.
